Opera Comique At the Airport

9 March 2013 Opera Comique At the Airport

I started New Opera Singapore in July 2011, with the aim of providing young singers a quality platform to create quality operatic works and engage the community through singing. As it is today, we have many talented and passionate young singers whose interest may have started in school choirs or through private vocal coaching. Many of them yearn for the opportunity to sing on the big stage, and while some do go on to further their studies at conservatories abroad, there are not many opportunities here for them to be a part of a full opera production today. It is for this reason that New Opera Singapore was formed, to give them this opportunity. It is only through staging works of great quality that young talent gain exposure and improve their craft.
Last year, we successfully staged three main productions, Opera Comique – In the Classroom in March, our inaugural opera production, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore in July, followed by Schubert’s song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin in December, all to resounding successes. We were also awarded the NAC Seed Grant for FY12-15, a grant aimed at developing promising new and emerging arts groups.
We are excited to kick off our main season this year, which begins with the third edition of our popular Opera Comique series, Opera Comique: At the Airport at the Arts House Chamber. In July, we present our second full-length opera, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the SOTA Theatre.
New Opera Singapore exists because our lives have been moved by music and we want to share this joy with everyone around us. We aim to demystify opera and classical music through innovative, modern and exciting productions and community outreach programmes. Through our programmes, we hope to reshape the face of opera in Singapore today which many consider an “old-fashioned, elitist art form”.
None of this can be possible without a strong team. I want to especially thank the people behind the scenes who make all this possible. Our Patron Ms Goh Chok Tong for her invaluable advice, the Directors of our company, the numerous donors and sponsors who have supported us and all those whose invaluable efforts have made this production possible.
And above all, You, for coming tonight. It will be a night to remember!
